USB problems on an Ubuntu box

Preamble

My Ubuntu box displays very few connected devices automatically. As this Wiki hoster provides some ways to markup I'll use this site to document what I have tried.

The computer runs Oneiric Ocelot.

It seems to be associated with me having an old card reader unprepared for bigger capacity cards.

multiple times, but GUI offers the three options as expected.
